According to Healthcare Without Harm, U.S. hospitals generate more than two million tons of medical waste each year. Much of that waste is unused medical supplies and equipment.  MedShare is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare and the environment through the efficient recovery and redistribution of surplus medical supplies and equipment to those most in need. We collect this surplus from hospitals, distributors and manufacturers, and redistribute it to qualified healthcare facilities in the developing world. We also outfit medical missions and safety net clinics in both the U.S. and abroad.  Since MedShare’s founding in 1998, MedShare has shipped over 800 40-foot containers worth over $100 million to over 95 countries in the developing world while diverting over 2 million cubic feet of medical surplus from local landfills.

MedShare is a Charity Navigator 4-Star Charity.

Since 1944, The Builders Association of Northern, NJ (BANNJ) has served as the premier voice for the building industry as a professional trade association serving builders, remodelers, developers, contractors, service professionals and suppliers in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic & Sussex counties. BANNJ is a local chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the New Jersey Builders Association (NJBA). Our mission is to enhance our members’ ability to provide safe, affordable, quality housing, remodeling and commercial development to the citizens of New Jersey and whose members are committed to integrity and professionalism in the home building industry.

Home building is an essential component of the US economy and way of life. The construction and renovation of residential housing and commercial projects can provide employment, create demand for manufactured building products, and give the real estate industry a constant supply of new products. In addition to these economic benefits, construction and renovation builds communities, strengthens families, satisfies the demand for housing and makes the American Dream of homeownership a reality.

The members of BANNJ are proud to be the providers of finely-crafted, quality, safe, secure homes and commercial development.

The Wave Set is an organization dedicated to giving others a second chance at life by spreading awareness and educating on the importance of organ donation. While cultivating a brand that correlates with this cause, The Wave Set helps create a culture of love, unity and selflessness, thus showing the world that “We Are Vital to Each other”.

The Wave Set was founded by brothers, Jared and Cameron, ironically born 3 years apart to the day. However, their shared birthday isn’t the only fascinating connection between the two of them. Younger brother Cameron was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, primarily affecting his liver, at the age of 13. About a decade later (in August of 2013), things took an unfortunate turn when his doctors explained that they had spotted a tumor on his liver and his disease had been consistently progressing. A liver transplant had become necessary in order for him to continue his life, but due to the high demand of organs, regardless of his critical state, he was nowhere near the top of the list. When doctors posed the idea of undergoing a living-donor transplant (where someone donates 40-60% of their liver, having both the donor and recipient’s liver regenerate to full size) Jared jumped at the opportunity. As fate would have it, he was approved and they successfully underwent the transplant surgery on February 11th 2014.

In December 2013, The Wave Set launched a successful crowd-funding campaign to raise money for the production of a documentary depicting their family’s journey through the transplant experience. In addition, the brothers launched a line of The Wave Set apparel, which was used to incentivize all potential contributors to support their campaign. This also brought additional awareness by acting as a visual representation of their advocacy to the cause.

The Wave Set looks to set forth their first grassroots campaign, which will raise additional awareness by planning and executing in-person speaking engagements, hosting college visits, and facilitating live events nationwide. These campaigns also aim to share the stories of people all over the world who face the harsh realities of the need for a life-saving organ transplant.

Purchasing screen printed items from Spectrum Works provides an inspiring way for companies to support employment for individuals with autism without sacrificing quality and the bottom line. For additional impact, the items can be tagged “made by individuals with autism” increasing the company’s image as a socially responsible organization.

Once financial sustainability is attained with its first social enterprise with a record of success, Spectrum Works will set up additional enterprises and then replicate the model across the United States creating sustainable impact. Ultimately, the goal of Spectrum Works goes beyond paychecks and sustainability, it’s about raising awareness that individuals with autism can work and contribute to society so that in the future every person with autism will have access to the job training, work experiences and guidance required to realize his or her true potential.

New Concepts is a community non-profit organization committed to people with disabilities and their families. Inspired by the vision of families and people with developmental disabilities, New Concepts enables people to realize their dreams and to achieve their individual potential through quality community programs and services that include housing, vocational and day program training, recreation advocacy and family education and support.

From these early dreams and with seed money provided by families of Bergen County Community Development Program, from one residential home in 1986 to homes throughout the Bergen County, we are working on developing new special needs housing to enable people to live there the rest of their life rather than being from (homes to apartments, etc.) because of their growth or changing times. For 35 years New Concepts has been empowering and assisting individuals to "Enable the Disabled, Translate Disability into Ability, a winning opportunity!" New Concepts provides a platform for daily living skills and future growth where members can create a new beginning with goals and ideas to fulfill their potentials and make their dreams come a reality!

With the addition of two new residences in Clifton and Garfield, NJ which was effective on June 28th, 2012.  New Concepts manages a total of nine homes, as well as a Day Training Program for people with developmental disabilities located in Rochelle Park

Who We Are

United Way encompasses a global network of non-profit organizations operating in 48 countries and a national network of more than 1,300 locally governed organizations that work to create lasting positive changes in communities and people’s lives.

Building on more than a century of service, United Way engages local communities to identify the underlying causes of their most significant issues by developing strategies to pull together financial and human resources.

Locally, the United Way of Hudson County focuses its fundraising and support efforts on four critical areas that have the greatest impact on our communities:

  1. Protecting and saving youth victims who suffer from abuse and neglect
  2. Advocating for resources to help people with special needs
  3. Organizing the non-profit sector into a community resource bank
  4. Joining a nationwide alliance to end homelessness

Our Mission:

United Way of Hudson County’s mission is to improve the lives of the women, men and children in our communities by mobilizing leaders in the U.S. government. Non-profit and corporate sectors will create an effective impact by improving the quality of life in our communities.

United Way workers and volunteers reach out, network and motivate individuals and corporations with access to financial and material resources so that we can improve the lives of those in need and provide positive community impact.

Our Vision:

United Way of Hudson County knows there are solutions to the obstacles people in the community face as they live, work, and provide a home for themselves and their families. Everyone is entitled to a good quality of life free of hardship. With easy access to health care and other important resources individuals will rise above economic struggles. To support this vision, we will utilize the resources we have to:

  • Energize and inspire government leaders and representatives of the corporate and non-profit sectors to face our communities’ complex issues while finding solutions
  • Involve support human care agendas within our communities
  • Gather money, goods, and volunteer services to administer support throughout local charities.
  • Work closely with companies, foundations, and government organizations to help craft philanthropic strategies for the people we serve
  • Build coalitions around these strategies
  • Increase investments by expanding and diversifying our own development efforts
  • Measure, communicate, and learn from the impact of our efforts
  • Respect, serve, and advocate for every individual in our culturally and economically diverse communities

Who We Serve:

United Way of Hudson County serves the women, men and children residing in the communities of Bayonne, Guttenberg, Hoboken, Jersey City, North Bergen, Secaucus, Union City, Weehawken and West New York.

Our History:

United Way began in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, when a priest, two ministers and a rabbi recognized the need for cooperative action to address the needs of their poorest citizens. The Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J. O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart and Rabbi William S. Friedman convened and put together the first united campaign for ten health and welfare agencies. They created an organization to serve as an agent to:

  • Collect funds for local charities
  • Coordinate relief services
  • Counsel and refer clients to cooperating agencies
  • Make emergency assistance grants in cases that could not be referred.

That year, these clergymen and the citizens of Denver raised $21,700 and created a movement that would spread throughout the country and that would later become the United Way.

More than 120 years later, United Way continues to focus on the needs of the poor and disenfranchised and to mobilize the caring power of the nation’s communities so that they may join together to make a difference in the lives of the men, women and children who need their help.

We help people.

We know that sounds a bit broad, a bit vague, but consider this. Everyone has needs. Some are obvious. The homeless, the hungry, the sick, all need someone who cares. Those who are successful in life, who have been blessed with careers or businesses, they have needs too, the need to give back, to pay it forward, to make a positive difference in the world.

The Candle of Hope brings it all together. In any given day, we are active in communities, feeding the hungry, helping food pantries stay filled, moving clothing donations where they are needed.

What makes the Candle of Hope unique and effective is our special way of raising awareness and financial support for the needs in communities.

We organize music based fundraising events!

On Behalf of the Children We Serve

The recent war in Iraq has certainly illuminated America’s commitment to freedom. We are reminded that freedom is not free. The price is great. No one knows that better than the left-behind sons and daughters of America’s fallen heroes.Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $60,000,000 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.

In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

This assistance has had a positive, life-changing effect on many, many children. We are thankful for the commitment and support of our many members and volunteers.

A humanitarian organization, our mission is to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

How We Help

The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas:

Red Cross disaster responder handing a bottle of water to a little boy

Disaster Relief

The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims.

Man donating blood

Lifesaving Blood

Your donations of blood are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly 4 million people donate blood through the Red Cross, helping to provide more than 40% of America’s blood supply.

Little African girl holding a baby who just got a measles vaccination

International Services

The American Red Cross is part of the world’s largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, we help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and educate future humanitarians. Each year, we reach an average of more than 100 million people across the globe.

Military service woman with her family

Supporting America’s Military Families

The Red Cross helps military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Emergency communications, training, support to wounded warriors and veterans, and access to community resources help an average of 150,000 military families and veterans annually.

Woman learning CPR

Health and Safety Services

The Red Cross is the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.

The GMH Memorial Foundation is dedicated to the prevention of sudden cardiac death in children and young adults by better understanding its causes, identifying at risk individuals and families and offering those families state-of-the-art diagnosis, treatment and support.

Funds raised by The Gregory M. Hirsch Memorial Foundation support cardiac screening and education programs as well as the research and the detection of heart conditions in newborn babies and young children through The Pediatric Center for Heart Disease, a division of The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and other pediatric causes.

The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at HUMC is also one of a select group designated a full institutional member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals. This designation honors the contributions of a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, healthcare professionals and volunteers who have made the medical center an outstanding place of healing for children and their families. The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital was twice selected as one of the top 25 children's hospitals in the country and the top-ranked children's hospital in New Jersey by "Child" magazine.

HUMC is a 775-bed teaching and research hospital and provides the largest number of admissions in New Jersey. The medical center was recently ranked in five specialties including geriatric care, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopedics in U.S. News’s 2008 publication of America’s Best Hospitals. HUMC is the only New Jersey acute-care hospital to receive rankings in five specialties. For three years in a row, HealthGrades® named HUMC one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. This designation recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated superior clinical quality over a seven-year time period. HUMC is the only healthcare facility in New Jersey, New York, and New England to be named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Only one percent of the nation’s hospitals can make this claim.

The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc., is a volunteer nonprofit organization providing free primary and preventive medical care to low-income working people in Bergen County without insurance or the means to pay for care. BVMI is the only state licensed ambulatory care facility in the county that offers free healthcare for individuals whose income is 100 to 200 percent of the Federal Poverty guidelines and are not eligible for government funded health insurance. Patients are seen by appointment at the Center located at 241 Moore Street, Hackensack, NJ.

Since opening the center in November 2009, over 50 volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and others have treated over 1,000 patients with over 5,000 medical visits. Through early intervention and consistent treatment of patients, BVMI has been able to stabilize chronic conditions, help to decrease infectious disease, and reduce the use of emergency rooms in Bergen County hospitals.

The BVMI Healthcare Center is guided by the “Culture of Caring” philosophy, based on the ethical standard in medicine that was practiced long ago. We believe that how people are treated during a visit to BVMI’s Healthcare Center is as important as the medical care they receive.

Hackensack Riverkeeper fights for clean water, open space preservation and public access to the river for both active and passive recreation. It accomplishes its mission by prosecuting polluters, participating in the administration of local and regional open space trust funds, educating the public through school and community based programs, and organizing a variety of eco-programs, including cleanups, pontoon boat cruises, birding walks and canoe and kayak rentals in the Meadowlands. ECO-CRUISES. Hackensack Riverkeeper has been conducting these enjoyable excursions since 1995. Thirty-nine Open Eco-Cruises are scheduled from May 5 through October 14 aboard the pontoon cruisers Edward Abbey and Robert H. Boyle. Open trips are great for individuals, couples, and families and can be had for a donation of $25 per person for adults / $10 for kids 12 and under. CHARTER ECO-CRUISES can be arranged for groups of up to 26 people for any available date/time May 1 through October 28. Hackensack Riverkeeper asks a donation of $300 per boat for Adult Charter Eco-Cruises and $250 for Youth Charters. GUIDED PADDLES. Hackensack Riverkeeper's Paddling Center, located on the river at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, NJ is now open weekends through October 28 weather permitting. The Center offers both canoe & kayak rentals ($25 per paddler w/ a 2-paddler minimum) and guided tours through the nearby wetlands. Three summertime moonlight paddles are also scheduled. Cost: $30 per paddler. RIVER CLEANUPS. These active conservation events give people the opportunity to give back to the environment and their communities by doing some "watershed housekeeping". River Cleanups are scheduled at eight different waterside locations within the Hackensack River Watershed from Oradell Reservoir in the north to Bayonne's 16th Street Park in the south. Hackensack Riverkeeper provides cleanup tools and supplies as well as refreshments for all volunteers. All they ask is that everyone pitch in and help rid local waterways of litter. BIRD-WALKS. For groups interested in birding and bird study, Captain Hugh Carola is available to lead Bird-Walks or hawk watches at local birding hotspots within the Hackensack River Watershed region. visit http://www.hackensackriverkeeper.org for detailed descriptions and schedules.

Our Global Vision As a leader in cancer control since 1913, the American Cancer Society is committed to saving lives from cancer and reducing the global threat of the disease. We combine our relentless passion with the wisdom of experience to make this vision a reality by focusing on countries with the most need and where measurable results can be achieved. We know that cancer is one of the most preventable — and the most curable — of major chronic, life-threatening diseases. We recognize tobacco as the single most preventable cause of death. We’re working to reduce the incidence of tobacco-related cancers in low- and middle-income countries with a special emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa. In collaboration with a worldwide network of partnerships, we are urging governments and international organizations to recognize that cancer is a global priority requiring an urgent response.

At Greens Do Good, our mission is to transform the way our local community sources healthy produce by providing the freshest ingredients in a sustainable and socially responsible way. The daily structure and personal fulfillment of a job well done is an integral part of life—one that is just as essential for individuals with autism as it is for any other adult. Yet, nearly half of 25-year-olds with autism have never held a paying job. Greens Do Good is doing its part to help change that.

Established in 2007, the mission of the Eastwick Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is twofold:

  • Provide scholarships to students attending Eastwick College and the HoHoKus School of Trade & Technical Sciences so they may graduate on time.
  • Excel as a valued member of the community by aiding local non-profit organizations.  Students and staff are especially committed to raising funds for Feed The Hungry which supports local food pantries.

Our Eastwick Elite Scholarships help deserving students overcome financial obstacles so that they may graduate on time and find a good job.  Our Feed The Hungry program and other community outreach efforts support neighbors in need.  Not only are we are changing the lives of those we help now, but we are also impacting their family’s life for years to come.

The Eastwick Foundation is funded by donations from individuals and corporations like you.  Your suggestions and input matter.  Please contact Executive Director Jeanne Patrican, jpatrican@eastwick.edu or 201-357-8260, to share them.

Since 1985, we have been here for New Jersey and we will continue to be here for our community, providing care and support for New Jersey families today and helping to advance research for a cure tomorrow. As Alzheimer’s New Jersey® (formerly known as Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter) our commitment to local programs and services is stronger than ever.

In December 2015, the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter announced its decision to disaffiliate from the National Alzheimer’s Association® in order to maintain our status as an independent, stand-alone non-profit organization committed to serving New Jersey.  Our Board made this decision in response to a National Alzheimer’s Association vote to end its existing affiliation agreements with all local independent Chapters across the country and merge them into one nation-wide, non-profit organization with national – not local governance – a move that our Board believes would drastically reduce our local programs and services.

Our new name – Alzheimer’s New Jersey – reflects our commitment to individuals and families that are impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia right here at home in New Jersey.  Our Board, staff and volunteers are excited to now direct 100% of our donors’ generosity as well as our time and energy to our local communities. Our vision: Improve the lives of people in New Jersey who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias; offering continuous hope and support. Our Mission: To respond to the needs of people in New Jersey who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, by providing programs and community partnerships that increase awareness and access to services
