The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc., is a volunteer nonprofit organization providing free primary and preventive medical care to low-income working people in Bergen County without insurance or the means to pay for care. BVMI is the only state licensed ambulatory care facility in the county that offers free healthcare for individuals whose income is 100 to 200 percent of the Federal Poverty guidelines and are not eligible for government funded health insurance. Patients are seen by appointment at the Center located at 241 Moore Street, Hackensack, NJ.
Since opening the center in November 2009, over 50 volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and others have treated over 1,000 patients with over 5,000 medical visits. Through early intervention and consistent treatment of patients, BVMI has been able to stabilize chronic conditions, help to decrease infectious disease, and reduce the use of emergency rooms in Bergen County hospitals.
The BVMI Healthcare Center is guided by the “Culture of Caring” philosophy, based on the ethical standard in medicine that was practiced long ago. We believe that how people are treated during a visit to BVMI’s Healthcare Center is as important as the medical care they receive.
