| Spectrum Works
UNIQUE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP – Creating Employment Opportunities for People with Autism
Spectrum Works is a nonprofit screen printing company with a unique social mission. This innovative nonprofit social enterprise incorporates individuals with autism into the workplace empowering them with the confidence and skills needed to achieve a sense of independence, purpose and pride.
Given the staggering statistics –1 in 88 children in the United States has autism– it’s easy to extrapolate that a tremendous amount of children with autism will be graduating in the next few years. Unfortunately, these individuals disappear from public view after they leave school—eighty to ninety percent of adults with autism are unemployed or underemployed. Spectrum Works aspires to be the catalyst to change this, giving people with autism the opportunity to enjoy productive, rewarding lives.
Spectrum Works aims to increase self-sufficiency for its employees with autism and to attain financial sustainability for the organization through the sale of products created by its workforce. Every screen printed purchase helps support jobs for individuals with autism as all revenue is reinvested into the business to sustain the employment program. Spectrum Works also provides job training for students as part of their high school curriculum.
Spectrum Works partnership with Green Distribution, one of the largest screen printing companies on the East Coast, enables Spectrum Works to produce both volume and specialty orders at a competitive price while giving people with autism the opportunity to show society that they are capable of producing high quality products. Green Distribution produces screen printed items for organizations such as Harley Davidson, Major League Baseball, Universal Music, Disney, and the NFL. All screen printed items sold by Spectrum Works are produced with the assistance of individuals with autism.
This innovative employment model demonstrates how companies can partner with nonprofits to impact the lives of individuals with autism. Purchasing screen printed items from Spectrum Works provides an inspiring way for companies to support employment for individuals with autism without sacrificing quality and the bottom line. For additional impact, the items can be tagged “made by individuals with autism” increasing the company’s image as a socially responsible organization.
Once financial sustainability is attained with its first social enterprise with a record of success, Spectrum Works will set up additional enterprises and then replicate the model across the United States creating sustainable impact. Ultimately, the goal of Spectrum Works goes beyond paychecks and sustainability, it’s about raising awareness that individuals with autism can work and contribute to society so that in the future every person with autism will have access to the job training, work experiences and guidance required to realize his or her true potential.

Building on more than a century of service, United Way engages local communities to identify the underlying causes of their most significant issues by developing strategies to pull together financial and human resources.
Locally, the United Way of Hudson County focuses its fundraising and support efforts on four critical areas that have the greatest impact on our communities:

Everyone is entitled to a good quality of life free of hardship. With easy access to health care and other important resources individuals will rise above economic struggles. - Energize and inspire government leaders and representatives of the corporate and non-profit sectors to face our communities’ complex issues while finding solutions
- Involve support human care agendas within our communities
- Gather money, goods, and volunteer services to administer support throughout local charities.
- Work closely with companies, foundations, and government organizations to help craft philanthropic strategies for the people we serve

Who We Serve:
United Way of Hudson County serves the women, men and children residing in the communities of Bayonne, Guttenberg, Hoboken, Jersey City, North Bergen, Secaucus, Union City, Weehawken and West New York.
Our History:
United Way began in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, when a priest, two ministers and a rabbi recognized the need for cooperative action to address the needs of their poorest citizens. The Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J. O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart and Rabbi William S. Friedman convened and put together the first united campaign for ten health and welfare agencies. They created an organization to serve as an agent to:
- Collect funds for local charities
- Coordinate relief services
- Counsel and refer clients to cooperating agencies
- Make emergency assistance grants in cases that could not be referred.
That year, these clergymen and the citizens of Denver raised $21,700 and created a movement that would spread throughout the country and that would later become the United Way.
More than 120 years later, United Way continues to focus on the needs of the poor and disenfranchised and to mobilize the caring power of the nation’s communities so that they may join together to make a difference in the lives of the men, women and children who need their help.

| The Candle of Hope
We help people.
We know that sounds a bit broad, a bit vague, but consider this. Everyone has needs. Some are obvious. The homeless, the hungry, the sick, all need someone who cares. Those who are successful in life, who have been blessed with careers or businesses, they have needs too, the need to give back, to pay it forward, to make a positive difference in the world.
The Candle of Hope brings it all together. In any given day, we are active in communities, feeding the hungry, helping food pantries stay filled, moving clothing donations where they are needed.
What makes the Candle of Hope unique and effective is our special way of raising awareness and financial support for the needs in communities.
We organize music based fundraising events! |

| Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation
|
The recent war in Iraq has certainly illuminated America’s commitment to freedom. We are reminded that freedom is not free. The price is great. No one knows that better than the left-behind sons and daughters of America’s fallen heroes.Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $60,000,000 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.
In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster.
This assistance has had a positive, life-changing effect on many, many children. We are thankful for the commitment and support of our many members and volunteers.

| American Red Cross - North Jersey Region
A humanitarian organization, our mission is to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
How We Help
The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas:
|
The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims.
|
Your donations of blood are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly 4 million people donate blood through the Red Cross, helping to provide more than 40% of America’s blood supply.
|
The American Red Cross is part of the world’s largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, we help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and educate future humanitarians. Each year, we reach an average of more than 100 million people across the globe.
|
|
The Red Cross is the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.

Through early intervention and consistent treatment of patients, BVMI has been able to stabilize chronic conditions, help to decrease infectious disease, and reduce the use of emergency rooms in Bergen County hospitals.
The BVMI Healthcare Center is guided by the “Culture of Caring” philosophy, based on the ethical standard in medicine that was practiced long ago. We believe that how people are treated during a visit to BVMI’s Healthcare Center is as important as the medical care they receive. |

| Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc.
The mission of Hackensack Riverkeeper is to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River watershed and its living resources. Hackensack Riverkeeper fights for clean water, open space preservation and public access to the river for both active and passive recreation. It accomplishes its mission by prosecuting polluters, participating in the administration of local and regional open space trust funds, educating the public through school and community based programs, and organizing a variety of eco-programs, including cleanups, pontoon boat cruises, birding walks and canoe and kayak rentals in the Meadowlands.
ECO-CRUISES. Hackensack Riverkeeper has been conducting these enjoyable excursions since 1995. Thirty-nine Open Eco-Cruises are scheduled from May 5 through October 14 aboard the pontoon cruisers Edward Abbey and Robert H. Boyle. Open trips are great for individuals, couples, and families and can be had for a donation of $25 per person for adults / $10 for kids 12 and under.
CHARTER ECO-CRUISES can be arranged for groups of up to 26 people for any available date/time May 1 through October 28. Hackensack Riverkeeper asks a donation of $300 per boat for Adult Charter Eco-Cruises and $250 for Youth Charters.
GUIDED PADDLES. Hackensack Riverkeeper's Paddling Center, located on the river at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, NJ is now open weekends through October 28 weather permitting. The Center offers both canoe & kayak rentals ($25 per paddler w/ a 2-paddler minimum) and guided tours through the nearby wetlands. Three summertime moonlight paddles are also scheduled. Cost: $30 per paddler.
RIVER CLEANUPS. These active conservation events give people the opportunity to give back to the environment and their communities by doing some "watershed housekeeping". River Cleanups are scheduled at eight different waterside locations within the Hackensack River Watershed from Oradell Reservoir in the north to Bayonne's 16th Street Park in the south. Hackensack Riverkeeper provides cleanup tools and supplies as well as refreshments for all volunteers. All they ask is that everyone pitch in and help rid local waterways of litter.
BIRD-WALKS. For groups interested in birding and bird study, Captain Hugh Carola is available to lead Bird-Walks or hawk watches at local birding hotspots within the Hackensack River Watershed region.

| American Cancer Society
Our Global Vision
As a leader in cancer control since 1913, the American Cancer Society is committed to saving lives from cancer and reducing the global threat of the disease. We combine our relentless passion with the wisdom of experience to make this vision a reality by focusing on countries with the most need and where measurable results can be achieved. We know that cancer is one of the most preventable — and the most curable — of major chronic, life-threatening diseases. We recognize tobacco as the single most preventable cause of death. We’re working to reduce the incidence of tobacco-related cancers in low- and middle-income countries with a special emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa. In collaboration with a worldwide network of partnerships, we are urging governments and international organizations to recognize that cancer is a global priority requiring an urgent response.
